A frustrating day at Newcastle

Another journey north today with both Al Kout, and Island Brave running at Newcastle in the Northumberland Vase and Northumberland Plate. A change of tactics with Al Kout, not making the running, didn’t quite pay off, although coming 12th, he was only 8 lengths behind the impressive Zeeband of Roger Varian. 35 minutes later it was Islands Brave chance in the Northumberland Plate, and after his good run 11 days ago at Ascot over a trip slightly too far, we were hopeful for another big run. Again under a prominent ride by Ray Dawson, and with 1 furlong to go we thought he would win, although faded slightly coming a very credible 3rd beaten 2 1/4 lengths to Nicholas T. Our pleasure was short lived, with a subsequent stewards enquires which resulted in Island Braves disqualification, and placed 4th, allegedly having hung left in the final 110 yards, hampering Rajinsky. Ray Dawson received a 2 day ban for careless riding. Post race it was found that Island Brave had lost his right fore shoe, which may have contributed to his hanging. The race was run at a strong pace being over 5 seconds faster than the Consolation race, so its extra pleasing that the decision to have him handy rather than hold him up and looking to come with a strong run at the end, certainly paid off today. Song of the Isles, needed softer ground at Windsor.
